Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev was born on 3 September 1957 in Mysore city of Karnataka state. His father Vasudev was a doctor and mother’s name was Susheela Vasudev. Vasudev was different from other children since childhood. He was very fond of nature. Often it used to disappear for a few days in the forest, where they would sit on the high tree and enjoy the winds and go into deep meditation spontaneously. When he returned home, his bag was full of snakes, which he has mastered in catching them. At the age of 11, Jaggi Vasudev started practicing yoga. His yoga teacher was Sri Raghavendra Rao, popularly known as Malladihalli Swami. He earned a bachelor’s degree in the English language from the University of Mysore.
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudeva, at the age of 25, had unintentionally intensely intense self-realization, which changed the course of his life. One afternoon, Jaggi Vasudev climbed the Chamundi Hills in Mysore and sat on a rock. Then his eyes were fully opened. Suddenly, he felt beyond the body. He felt that he is not in his body, but has spread everywhere, in rocks, in trees, in the earth. By the time he returned to his senses, it was already evening. In the days that followed, Vasudeva once again experienced the same situation. He used to give up food and sleep for the next three or four days. This incident completely changed the way they live. Jaggi Vasudev decided to devote his entire life to sharing his experiences.
In 1983, he started his first yoga class in Mysore with seven colleagues. Dhyanalinga is said to have curative powers, which play an important role in human development and improvement. Being a meditation center, it is believed that after meditating, people get immense energy here. Here, people can stay meditating for as long as they want by sitting in the meditation center.
Over time, he traveled to Karnataka and Hyderabad and started organizing yoga classes. He was completely dependent on his poultry farm and even refused to take money from the people for the class. In 1992, Guru and his followers also founded Isha Yoga Center and Ashram. The ashram is built on the Vellingiri hills at Pundi near Coimbatore. This ashram is spread over a vast land of about 150 acres, within which there is a huge Dhyanalinga 13 feet high. There is also a very religious temple in the ashram complex, whose construction work was completed in 1999. This powerful place built for internal development is dedicated to bringing the four main paths of yoga – knowledge, karma, action and devotion to the people. According to Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, in addition to the United States Yoga Center, he has a total of 25 Yoga Centers worldwide.
Isha Foundation, founded by Sadhguru, is a non-profit human service institute, dedicated to the physical, mental, and internal well-being of the people. It is run by more than two lakh fifty thousand volunteers. It is headquartered at Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore. The Green Hands project is an environmental proposal of the Isha Foundation. Planting 16 crore trees across Tamil Nadu is the stated goal of the project. So far, in more than 1800 communities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry under the Green Hands project, 82 lakh saplings have been organized by over 20 lakh people. ARR was established in 2003 and wants to reach 70 million people in 54,000 villages in South India. In 2010 ARR has reached 7 million people in about 4200 villages.
